Manish Vira, MD

 

Manish Vira, MD joined the faculty from the National Cancer Institute as a urologic oncologist specializing in the surgical management of prostate, bladder, kidney, adrenal, and testis cancer. He has expertise in a wide array of surgical techniques including laparoscopic and robotic surgery. Dr. Vira completed his fellowship training at the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health under the mentorship of Dr. Marston Linehan, a pioneer in the research and treatment of kidney cancer.

While at the NCI, Dr. Vira conducted laboratory research studying the molecular and genetic mechanisms of prostate and kidney cancer. He also served as an investigator on several clinical trials of new medications in the treatment of localized and metastatic kidney cancer. His current research interests are in the development of diagnostic and surgical methods and in studying novel therapeutics in the treatment of urological cancers. His research has been published in leading national and international medical journals including The Journal of Urology, Urology, and The British Journal of Urology.

Dr. Vira earned his medical degree at Cornell University Medical College in New York City. While there he served as president of student body and on the board of admissions. After finishing his internship at the New York Hospital-Cornell, he completed his urologic residency training at the University of Pennsylvania under the leadership of Dr. Alan Wein. At U Penn, Dr. Vira conducted research in prostate and bladder cancer presenting his work at the Society of Urologic Oncology and the American Urological Association Meetings. For his work, he was recognized with the Joel and Linda Appel Research in Prostate Cancer award and the Pfizer Scholars in Urology Award.

Dr. Vira was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree, cum laude, in Biochemistry from Rice University in Houston, Texas.
