Renal Tumors: FAQ's

Q. Can I lead a normal life with one kidney?

A. You can live a normal life with one kidney. Many individuals are born with one kidney or lose a kidney when they donate to a friend or family member on dialysis. One should protect the kidney by keeping well hydrated and avoiding high protein or salty diets.

Q. If I need my adrenal gland removed with the kidney will I notice any difference with only one gland?

A. If your adrenal gland is removed, you will not notice any differences as long as your other adrenal gland is normal.

Q. Will placing a needle into the tumor cause it to spread?

A. In some cases a biopsy or percutaneous ablation of a tumor will be necessary. The risk of cells escaping the tumor during these processes is negligible if performed by an experienced individual.

Q. What are my chances of surviving renal cancer?

A. Survival depends upon the stage of the tumor. For localized tumors, cure rates are well over over 90%.

Q. What treatment do I need following removal of the tumor?

A. If surgical margins are negative no additional treatment is needed.
