Kidney & Ureteral Stones

What to Expect After Discharge

After treatment is complete, you can fully resume daily activities within one to two days.

No special diets related to the procedure are required.

You will be instructed to drink plenty of liquids to help the stone fragments pass. You may experience some pain as the fragments pass; this can last up to four to eight weeks. Oral pain medication and drinking lots of water will help relieve symptoms.

Expect to have some blood in your urine for a few days. This may last longer if you have a ureteral stent in place.

  • Pain Control: You can expect to have pain that may require pain medication for a few days after discharge. Thereafter, Tylenol should be sufficient to control the pain.
  • Showering: You may shower at home.
  • Activity: Taking walks is very important. Prolonged sitting or lying in bed should be avoided. Climbing stairs is fine. Driving should be avoided for at least one week after surgery. Absolutely no heavy lifting (greater than 20 pounds) for one week after the surgery. No exercising (jogging, swimming, treadmill, biking) until your doctor determines that it is safe to do so. You can expect to return to work within two to four weeks, depending on the type of your procedure.
  • Follow-up Appointment: You will need to call the Institute at 516.734.8500 soon after your discharge to schedule a follow up visit with your doctor. During this appointment you will obtain a long term follow up plan from your doctor.

Follow-up Tests & X-rays: Your doctor will determine if you need further tests or x-rays after the surgery.
