Depression

Depression is a brain and emotional disorder that affects most men at some time in their lives. Several health conditions can bring out symptoms of depression. In some diseases, such as prostate cancer, there are often the concerns related to longevity and disability. Impairment of sexual function may significantly alter quality of life, diminish self-esteem, and trigger concerns about aging.

It is normal to feel somewhat sad and anxious when confronted with the news of illness and dysfunction; however, when these feelings are severe, persistent, and accompanied by difficulties with sleep, declining appetite, poor concentration, the loss of the ability to enjoy things that were once enjoyable, diminished interest in sex, feelings of hopelessness, and even thoughts that life is no longer worth living, additional help is usually required. This help may involve education and reassurance, as well as specific counseling and antidepressant medication.

While depression may complicate urological conditions and their treatment, it is important to know that there are effective treatments for depression that may markedly improve symptoms and quality of life.

We at the Men's Health Center of the Arthur Smith Institute for Urology understand the importance of addressing depression. For further information, please contact:
