TURP: Transurethral Resection of the Prostate

A TURP (Transurethral Resection of the Prostate) is a relatively safe and successful surgery to relieve prostatic enlargement and obstruction which causes such symptoms as frequency, urgency, nocturia (getting up at night), hesitancy and slow urinary stream. During this procedure, the entire prostate is not removed. Prostate tissue is removed, but the capsule (outer lining) is left in tact. Symptoms are relieved in more than 85% of patients.

General Information

Hypertrophy is a common cause of prostate problems. An adenoma is tissue growth that arises from normal prostate tissue which can grow inwards towards the urethra (passage through which urine drains), compressing normal tissue and causing symptoms. A TURP is considered the "gold standard" treatment for benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). There is no incision with this procedure, few complications and a short recovery.
