Enlarged Prostate

The Operation

Before the surgery begins, you will meet with the anesthesiologist who will discuss anesthesia options-general vs. spinal anesthesia. Once you are asleep, your legs will be elevated and placed in stirrups. A thin, lighted instrument called a resectoscope will be introduced into your urethra (passage through which urine drains). Through this instrument, prostate tissue will be cut away and removed. During the procedure, blood and pieces of tissue and clots will be flushed continually from your bladder with water. At the end of the procedure a urinary catheter attached to a collection bag will be placed (a narrow, hollow tube inserted into the urinary passage to drain urine).
