Potential Risks and Complications
- Blood loss- You will see blood in the urine. As the blood is mixed with urine it may appear as a significant amount however less then 1 % of patients require a transfusion. Significant blood clots can bock uriniation and may require catheter reinsertion to flush out the clots.
- Urinary Tract Infection- occurs in 5-10% of patients.
- Retrograde Ejaculation- during ejaculation, your semen may go back into your bladder. It comes out the next time you urinate. This has no effect on your ability to obtain or maintain an erection, or to experience an orgasm. This will only affect your ability to have children.
- Urinary Incontinence- leakage of urine associated with the urge to urinate may occur for a few weeks after the surgery. This is expected and will resolve as bladder irritation from the procedure and catheter subside. Long term urinary leakage can occur in about 3% of patients.
- Urethral stricture- Scar tissue may occur in the water channel requiring additional surgery. This occurs in less than 1% of patients.
