Treatment Options Available for Pelvic Floor Dysfunction
Treatment of PFD is individualized for each patient and is primarily based upon the specific complex of symptoms and the muscles involved. Additionally, other problems like interstitial cystitis may also need therapy. Therapies may include
- Treatment of co-existing and exacerbating conditions (such as chronic constipation)
- Behavior modification
- Biofeedback
- Acupuncture
- Local heat
- Anti-inflammatory agents
- Alpha blockers
- Skeletal muscle relaxants
- Nerve blocks
- Transanal or transvaginal electrical stimulation therapy
- Physical Therapy
- Trigger point injection to affected muscle group(s)
- Neuromodulation (not FDA approved for PFD, but approved for "urgency-frequency syndrome," a condition that is often caused by PFD)
- Botox® injection to pelvic floor (Botox® is not FDA approved for this purpose)
